System unavailable after long search

Using OST V1.9.13

When we perform a search with just a few letters or two words, for example search for the name Joe Smith, the system churns and churns and if it takes too long to find the results the whole system goes offline and the Admin panel is no longer available.  The error you see on screen is Internal Server Error 500. There is no error posted in the OST logs.  The customer / open ticket screen is still available, but /scp is not.  I'm guessing it is something to do with Apache or our webserver.  When this happens we usually need to wait about 5 minutes and the system will start working again (without us doing anything).  

Does anyone know which setting in either OST, Apache, PHP, etc that I can change so that it will either fix this or will just abort the search if it takes more than XX seconds.  Thank you.
